On the Ground: Countdown to Germantown Day

Germantown Weekend

Germantown Weekend

Believe it or not, our time On the Ground in Germantown is winding down -- April 15 will be our last day on Chelten Avenue. Fortunately, we're going out with a bang, teaming up with the local community to celebrate Countdown to Germantown Day Weekend.

In six months, this northwest Philadelphia neighborhood will mark 330 years since its founding. This coming weekend's events will kick-off that celebration, showcasing the past, present and future of the storied area.

On Friday, First Friday -- a national tradition that brings communities out to art galleries and commercial corridors -- is coming to Germantown. Local businesses and restaurants will stay open late, hosting events and welcoming in local revelers. Come by Flying Kite's On the Ground space at 322 W. Chelten Avenue for one of your last opportunities to view our art exhibition Transformation, featuring neighborhood artists working in various media including installation, paint and photography.

Then, on Saturday, welcome the spring sunshine at Vernon Park. From 1 - 5 p.m., the Friends of Vernon Park will host live music, poetry, dance, children's activities, representatives from historic sites, mini exhibits featuring local artifacts, food vendors and interactive art projects. Not enticed yet? There will also be a community line dance set to Beyoncé's "Move Your Body," held in conjunction with First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" Campaign.

To close out the festivities, on Saturday evening, one of Germantown's newest institutions, iMPeRFeCT Gallery, will host an opening and reception featuring work from local artist (and Flying Kite contributor) Bonnie MacAllister

MacAllister's cross-genre work fuses performance, photography, fiber art and painting. Spectacle features new 2-D pieces in fiber and 3-D metal prints.

See you in Germantown!
