EDITOR'S PICK: Get Your Chess On with Philly ASAP

Chess anyone?

Of course. After all, myriad studies cite the importance of chess in improving academic achievement, patience, self-control and sportsmanship among school-aged youth. Even colleges are now providing substantial scholarships to the best chess players because of the critical thinking skills and strategy involved.

It's why the always-busy folks at Center City-based non-profit Philly ASAP (After School Activities Partnership) have spent the last six years organizing more than 200 chess clubs for some 4,000 city youth annually. Philly ASAP is holding its annual MLK Family Chess Day on Saturday at the African American Museum (701 Arch Street, Philadelphia), where the public is invited to take part in lessons and competitions from 2-4:30 p.m.

U.S. Rep (D-2) Chaka Fattah will play simultaneous chess games against ASAP's top chess students. In addition, a historical re-enactment by well-known historical character actor Daisy Nelson Century as Harriet Tubman will be held. Those interested can register by calling 215-545-2727 (ext. 17) or emailing [email protected]. The first 100 people to arrive will receive a free MLK Day t-shirt and attendees will be able to tour the museum and its newly renovated exhibits for free. Light snacks provided.
