EDITOR'S PICK: Time to Party Down for a Decade of Sugar Town

Started by a local music journalist who wanted to help promote female musicians, Sugar Town has evolved into a monthly celebration of lady rockers and performers that draws a diverse mix of acts, fans and praise.

In a Nov., 2010 interview with the Daily Femme blog, trailblazing music critic Sara Sherr says when she started Sugar Town that "a lot of the more popular rock bands and DJ nights in Philadelphia were men." While that still might be true to a degree, Sugar Town has been a beacon for ladies who rock, groove, or both.

Hard to believe, but Sherr and company will be celebrating Sugar Town's 10th anniversary this weekend. First held on Jan. 11, 2001 at the Trocadero's balcony bar, Sugar Town has since taken up residency at Tritone (1508 South Street, Philadelphia), which will play host to a pretty impressive lineup of musical acts starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

A mere $7 will get you music from the B-52s, Blondie, Garbage, Cyndi Lauper, The Go-Gos, Hole and Bettie Serveert, among others, as performed by local ladies like Betty Iron Thumbs, The Lopez, and Girls Dressed As Girls. D.J. Grace Ambrose and Pop Theory's Erin Mae Szrankowski will spin between sets, and be sure to check out Electrelane, a local outfit of which three-fourths of its members are Girls Rock Philly alum, at 10 p.m.
